US ICE describes Ofori-Atta as ‘illegal alien’ over visa overstay

The United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) has confirmed that Ghana’s former Finance Minister, Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta, overstayed his visitor visa and is considered an “illegal alien” under US immigration law.

ICE clarified that Ofori-Atta entered the United States on May 28, 2025, on a visitor visa that expired on November 27, 2025.

According to the agency, his conduct constitutes a violation of US immigration regulations and could result in deportation.

An ICE spokesperson provided the details in response to inquiries from TV3 journalist Joseph Ackah-Blay regarding Ofori-Atta’s arrest.

The spokesperson explained that Ofori-Atta has been issued a notice to appear before a Justice Department immigration judge and will remain in ICE custody while being processed through the legal system.

“The Trump administration has been abundantly clear: aliens must respect our laws or face the consequences. Overstaying a visa is an immigration law violation that can result in deportation,” ICE stated.

Ofori-Atta is facing multiple corruption-related charges in Ghana linked to his tenure as Finance Minister.

Ghanaian authorities have formally requested his extradition, though ICE confirmed that the former minister will first undergo due process in the United States before any extradition matters are considered.
