Ghana orders four multi-mission Airbus helicopters
Ghana has made its inaugural purchase of multi-mission Airbus helicopters, marking a significant milestone in enhancing the nation’s defence, security, and air transport capabilities.
Airbus Helicopters announced on Friday, January 15, 2026, that it had secured a contract with Ghana’s Ministry of Defence for the supply of four helicopters: two H175Ms, one ACH175, and one ACH160.
This acquisition aligns with government plans outlined during the presentation of the 2026 Budget in Parliament on November 13, 2025. At that time, Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson disclosed that the government would commence procurement processes for four modern helicopters, alongside one long-range and one medium-range aircraft, to enhance the operational efficiency of the Ghana Air Force.
Under the agreement, Airbus stated that the two H175Ms will be deployed as multi-mission helicopters to support transport, search and rescue operations, emergency medical services, and disaster relief. The ACH175 and ACH160 will be used primarily for transport duties.
The commitment from Ghana marks the return of Airbus Helicopters to the country with a defined focus on customer support and partnership, said Arnaud Montalvo, Head of Africa and the Middle East Region for Airbus Helicopters.
He expressed particular enthusiasm about the introduction of the H175M into Ghana’s fleet.
“We are particularly excited that the H175M will be operated in Ghana, demonstrating the aircraft’s versatility across defence and security missions. This key deal also makes Ghana a leading customer in West Africa for our premium corporate helicopters, the ACH160 and ACH175,” Mr. Montalvo added.
The H175 helicopter, in service since 2014, belongs to Airbus’ super-medium class and is designed to combine long-range capability with high payload capacity and smooth flight performance.
Airbus says the aircraft is suitable for a wide range of onshore and offshore missions, including disaster relief, search and rescue, public services, military operations, crew changes, and private and business aviation.
The ACH160, the latest addition to Airbus’ ACH family, is described as the world’s most technologically advanced helicopter. It incorporates 68 new patented Airbus technologies and offers about 20 percent more cabin volume per passenger than previous-generation medium twin helicopters.
Its windows are also 35 percent larger than those of competing models, delivering what Airbus describes as the brightest cabin in its class.
The acquisition positions Ghana as a leading customer for Airbus’ premium helicopter products in West Africa and is expected to significantly boost the country’s capacity in emergency response, defence operations, and executive transport.
