Police intercept more than 1,600 suspected narcotics parcels in Tema

Police in Tema have intercepted over 1,600 parcels of substances suspected to be narcotic drugs, following a coordinated intelligence-led operation, according to a statement issued by ASP Dede Dzakpasu, Head of Public Affairs.
Authorities seized a total of 1,613 parcels during an operation along the Akosombo–Tema road, aimed at disrupting regional drug trafficking networks.
The operation was carried out after intelligence was received on 10 January 2026, indicating that large quantities of suspected narcotics were being transported from the Volta Region towards Tema. Officers subsequently mounted surveillance along the route, focusing on the Agomeda Junction area.
The Tema Regional Police Command has issued a statement, signed by ASP Dede Dzakpasu, Head of Public Affairs, Tema, detailing the interception of two vehicles on January 11.

At approximately 12:45 a.m., police intercepted a white Toyota Highlander and a black Mitsubishi Pajero, driven by two men aged 33 and 39. A search of the vehicles yielded several compressed parcels wrapped in yellow material, suspected to be narcotic substances.
Both suspects were apprehended at the scene, and the vehicles were escorted to the police station for further investigation.
On January 12, the suspects and seized items were handed over to the Regional Criminal Investigations Department (CID) in Tema, where photographs and inventories were taken.
Police recovered 872 parcels from the Mitsubishi Pajero and 741 parcels from the Toyota Highlander. The suspects remain in police custody, assisting with investigations. Samples of the seized substances will be sent to the Forensic Crime Laboratory for analysis, while searches are planned at the suspects’ residences. Police are preparing to process the suspects for court.
The Tema Regional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to intensifying operations against drug trafficking and other criminal activities, urging the public to provide credible information to support security efforts.
