NPP flagbearer race: 118 Parliamentary candidates in 2024 election declare support for Bawumia

A sizeable group of New Patriotic Party parliamentary candidates from the 2024 general elections has publicly expressed support for Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, in anticipation of the party’s flagbearer election, scheduled to take place on January 31, 2026.
The endorsement, which was announced during a press conference on January 8, serves as a consolidation of their backing for Dr Bawumia, who is seeking re-election to lead the party in the 2028 presidential election.
The former parliamentary candidates described their collective decision as a clear demonstration of unity and cohesion within the party, noting that the majority of frontline representatives selected by the NPP in 2024 are now rallying behind a single candidate.
Andrew Agyapa Mercer, who spoke on behalf of the group, stated that their declaration builds upon an earlier endorsement by 63 NPP Members of Parliament who won seats in the 2024 elections, indicating growing momentum within the party’s ranks.
According to the group, the decision followed extensive consultations across party structures and the wider society, which included polling station executives, constituency executives, former party officers, councils of elders and patrons, as well as youth groups, market women, farmers, fisherfolk, business leaders, opinion leaders, religious figures, and traditional authorities.
According to their statement, the consultations yielded overwhelmingly positive feedback in support of Dr Bawumia across various constituencies.
The former candidates emphasized that their endorsement was based on a thorough analysis, a sense of duty, and conviction, untainted by inducements, coercion, or pressure.
They portrayed Dr Bawumia, the former Vice President of Ghana, as a visionary leader who possesses competence, integrity, and innovation, highlighting his pivotal role in Ghana’s digital transformation, his contributions to economic management, and his leadership in initiatives such as the Domestic Gold Purchase Programme and broader macroeconomic stabilisation efforts.
Furthermore, they presented Dr Bawumia as the most prepared, experienced, and viable candidate for the party’s future, with a clear vision centered on digitalisation, economic transformation, infrastructure development, human capital growth, agricultural modernisation, and good governance.
The group pledged to actively collaborate with him to secure victory in both the presidential primaries and future general elections, while urging party members to unite behind his candidacy in the interest of the NPP and Ghana.
