Water supply disrupted in Kumasi after Barekese Plant blast

The Ghana Water Limited in the Ashanti Region has announced significant technical challenges at the Barekese Water Treatment Plant following an explosion at the facility’s high-lift section.
In a statement released on Thursday, December 11, management explained that the incident damaged one of the three operational pumps, resulting in decreased water flow and pressure to parts of Kumasi and surrounding areas. GWL’s engineers are reportedly working diligently to repair the affected pump and restore normal distribution levels.
The statement noted that until full restoration is achieved, the technical team is rationing and managing the available water volume to improve supply and maintain stable pressure across the network.
“We understand the importance of a reliable water supply and are committed to resolving this issue as quickly as possible,” the statement said.
GWL Management apologised to consumers for the inconvenience and thanked the public for their patience as work continues to address the fault.
For further information, the public is encouraged to contact Dr. Hanson Mensah-Akutteh, Regional Chief Manager for the Ashanti Production Region, via 024 489 1331 or hakutteh@gwcl.com.gh.
