Speak Up, Report Wrongdoing: GACC Leads Charge Against Corruption in Ashanti Region

The fight against corruption received a significant boost in the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipal in the Ashanti Region as the Ghana Anti-Corruption Coalition (GACC), in a spirited collaboration with Nkawie Lanet, marked the annual International Anti-Corruption Day.
The impactful campaign was centered around the rallying cry, “Speak Up. Report Wrongdoing Protect GHANA”
The GACC team, spearheaded by the dynamic Focal Person, Madam Christiana Osei, dedicated the day to raising awareness about the critical role of citizen engagement and the legal framework supporting those who expose malfeasance. A core element of the sensitization efforts focused on the provisions of the Whistleblower Act 2006 (Act 720), which offers protection to individuals who report corrupt practices.

The Campaign Targets Young Voices and Local Business
Under the sub-theme, “Whistleblowing Without Fear: Protecting Young Voices that Speak Truth to Power,” the GACC’s outreach strategy targeted a diverse cross-section of the community.
The campaign involved visits to key locations within the Atwima Nwabiagya Municipal, including, Lovtiyone Clothing, Maakro MA School and Sepaase MA School.
At the schools, the focus was firmly on the youth, who were educated on the importance of courage, protection, and speaking up for integrity.
Discussions introduced the young people to concepts like whistleblowing, nepotism, and other petty corrupt practices, equipping them with the knowledge to recognize and resist such acts from an early age.
The initiative received high praise from local stakeholders. Mr. Kweku Okyere Darko, CEO of Lovityone Clothing, commended the GACC for the timely and essential campaign. Similarly, the Headmistress for Maakro MA School, Madam Esther Arthur lauded the efforts, emphasizing the need for frequency.
Both urged the GACC to make the campaign a frequent, recurring event to help sustainably battle the pervasive issue of corruption in the community and the nation at large.
How to Report Corrupt Practices
The GACC used the platform to educate the public on the various reliable channels through which they can report corrupt practices, ensuring that citizens know where to turn when they witness wrongdoing.
Key institutions and community heads that can receive reports include, the Ghana Police Service, Chiefs and Heads of the Community, the Commission on Human Rights and Administrative Justice (CHRAJ), the Office of the Special Prosecutor (OSP)
The successful execution of this crucial anti-corruption drive was made possible through the generous sponsorship provided by the Hewlett Foundation, underscoring the vital role of organizational support in combating this national menace.
The GACC and Nkawie Lanet have positioned themselves at the forefront of the battle, reminding every citizen that protecting Ghana begins with the simple yet profound act of speaking up.
