Spread the love

The Kwahu East District Assembly on Friday marked the 41st National Farmers’ Day Celebration at Kwahu Suminakese in the Eastern Region, drawing hundreds of farmers, traditional leaders, assembly members, and district heads to honour the contributions of local farmers to Ghana’s food security and rural development.

The event was attended by the District Chief Executive, Hon. Samuel Asamoah, who delivered the keynote address, highlighting major interventions currently underway to support farmers across the district.

Government–NGO “Prosper Project” Launched

Hon. Asamoah announced the introduction of a major new initiative known as the Prosper Project, a collaboration between the Government of Ghana and several NGOs aimed at improving infrastructure and agricultural productivity in farming communities.

Under the Prosper Project, the district will benefit from:

Construction and upgrading of feeder roads in farming areas
Provision of boreholes to improve water access
Loan support schemes for farmers
Training programmes to boost modern farming practices
Development of local markets, especially for perishable goods
Construction of a district food storage warehouse for future food security

He further disclosed that 22 communities have already received supplies of maize, coconut, groundnut, cocoa seedlings, plantain and banana suckers to support farmers this season.

Irrigation Projects in Progress

To strengthen all-year-round farming, irrigation projects have begun at:

Ahinase
Nkwantanang
Suntre

These projects are expected to provide reliable water sources during dry seasons, ensuring increased farming productivity.

Akoko Nketenkete Project Records 529 Registrations

The DCE noted progress on the Akoko Nketenkete Project, with 529 farmers already registered. He encouraged residents to visit the District Agriculture Office or contact any extension officer to enroll.

Women’s Bank Support Scheme

A new Women’s Bank initiative has been introduced, offering accessible loans to women not only in trade but also those actively engaged in agriculture.

Establishment of Farmer Service Centres

Hon. Asamoah revealed plans to open Farmer Service Centres across the district. These centres will stock farm implements and equipment that farmers can access and pay for after harvest, easing the financial burden on farming households.

Health, Water, and Infrastructure Development

The DCE also noted the construction of CHPS compounds in multiple farming communities, some of which had been left uncompleted by the previous administration. He assured residents that government has paid the remaining funds to contractors, and work is actively ongoing at:
Bokuruwa
Abiso No. 1
Other beneficiary communities

Additionally, the Assembly has commenced the drilling of 14 boreholes and the installation of 15 mechanized boreholes to improve potable water access.

He also highlighted ongoing school construction projects in various communities to boost education infrastructure.

Security and Chieftaincy Disputes

On district security, Hon. Asamoah commended DISEC members for their efforts, especially in managing chieftaincy disputes. He urged traditional leaders to rely on customary conflict-resolution methods to maintain peace.

He also mentioned the deployment of military officers to handle Fulani-related security challenges, assuring residents of improved safety.
