The National Anti-Illegal Mining Operations Secretariat (NAIMOS) has taken action to halt the destruction of cocoa farms in Adanse Anomabo, Bosome Freho District, following alarm raised by farmers over the encroachment of illegal mining into their plantations.

During an intelligence-led operation on Monday, officers found that miners operating at the locally-known Kakra site had torn apart parts of the community’s cocoa belt.

Farmers who had petitioned authorities expressed outrage and worry over the threat to their livelihoods.

The miners fled upon arrival of the team, but the task force destroyed equipment left behind, including tools and materials, and immobilized six excavators on site. A pump-action gun and seven cartridges were also seized.

Makeshift shelters used by the miners were dismantled and set on fire, along with hoses and other materials supporting the illicit operation.

Authorities stated that the exercise aimed to prevent further damage while investigations continue.
