The crucial role of farmers and fishermen as the economic backbone of Ghana was highlighted by the Municipal Chief Executive (MCE) for Offinso Municipal Assembly, Hon. Frank Owusu Amoah, during the 41st National Farmers’ Day celebration.

The event, held on Friday, December 5, 2025, at Naama Community Park, was celebrated under the theme: “Feed Ghana, Eat Ghana, Secure The Future.”

MCE Amoah passionately stressed that the agricultural sector remains the country’s main economic engine, contributing significantly to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP) and employment generation.

“It is gratifying to say that our farmers and Fishermen deserve more honour than we can bestow on them, because had it not been them, our national economy would have become seriously handicapped,” Hon. Amoah stated.

The National Farmers’ Day was instituted to recognize this vital contribution, particularly following the challenging agricultural years of 1983 marked by bushfires and drought.

The MCE noted that the government has been fulfilling its mandate in the sector through several policy interventions geared towards food security, sustainable livelihoods, and economic resilience.

A key initiative is the Feed Ghana Program, which includes modules like tree crop development, Nkoko Nketenkete (small poultry), and the Vegetable Development Project (Yeridua). The MCE urged farmers to register with the Department of Agriculture to take full advantage of the program.

“The government is poised to creating the necessary environment and incentivize farmers to motivate them to play their role more effectively,” he affirmed, linking these efforts directly to the year’s theme of producing and consuming local goods, generating jobs, and securing the economy.

The Department of Agriculture in Offinso implemented numerous programmes throughout the year to strengthen food security and climate resilience.

Agricultural Extension Agents conducted home and farm visits, providing technical guidance on good agronomic practices to manage changing weather conditions.

Community sensitization led to the registration of over 1,200 farmers onto the FSRP platform and the establishment of demonstration sites for maize and rice production.

Furthermore, interventions from the Ghana Cocoa Board (COCOBOD), through the Cocoa Health and Extension Division (CHED), have significantly benefited local cocoa farmers.

These included the Cocoa Diseases and Pest Control Programme (CODAPEC), Cocoa Mass Pruning, and Cocoa Pollination. Offinso’s two main cocoa stations also raised 54,900 free hybrid cocoa seedlings for farmers during the 2024/2025 cocoa season.

District Best Farmer and Offinsoman Hemaa

Hon. Amoah concluded by extending congratulations to all award winners, especially the District Best Farmer, expressing hope that the recognition would motivate them and inspire other farmers and prospective farmers to increase production and strive for similar honours next year.
