Two Nigerian nationals have been sentenced to 12 months imprisonment each by the Madina District Court II for attempting to acquire Ghana Cards using false identities.

Ike Isaac, also known as Alex Kwesi Brown Appiah, 20, and Emmanuel Innocent Egbe, also known as Innocent Emmanuel Kodom, 24, were convicted of providing false information to National Identification Authority officials and possessing forged documents.

Following a full trial on Friday, November 7, 2025, Judge Susana Nyakotey convicted the two. They were charged under Section 40(1)(a) of the National Identity Register Act, 2008 (Act 750), and Section 166 of the Criminal Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29) for Providing False Information to National Identification Registration Officials and Possessing Forged Documents, respectively.

As per the judgment, both individuals were sentenced to concurrent terms of 12 months imprisonment for providing false information and 13 months for possessing forged documents.

Upon completion of their sentences, they will be deported to Nigeria. The NIA commended the Ghana Police Service, the CID Unit attached to the NIA, and the Office of the Attorney-General for their efforts in securing the convictions.

According to the NIA, this conviction underscores its dedication to safeguarding the integrity of the Ghana Card registration process as the single credible source of identity for all lawful residents.

The Authority issued a warning that the dissemination of false information, impersonation, and the use of forged documents are serious criminal offenses.

The Authority pledged to continue working in conjunction with security and judicial agencies to detect, investigate, and prosecute individuals who attempt to subvert the system.

In addition, it reminded the public that the Ghana Card not only serves as a national identity document but also as the foundation for government services, financial transactions, and national security, emphasizing that maintaining its credibility is a shared responsibility.
