Police Inspector who killed girlfriend jailed for life

The Kumasi High Court has sentenced Police Inspector Ahmed Twumasi, also known as “Taacum,” to life imprisonment following a guilty verdict for murder.
Inspector Twumasi was convicted of fatally shooting his girlfriend, Victoria Dapaah, also known as Maadwoa, near her residence in Adum, Kumasi, on April 20, 2023.
The incident sparked widespread outrage and renewed concerns over gun violence and professional misconduct within the security services.
Although Inspector Twumasi initially admitted to the shooting, claiming it was unintentional, he later pleaded not guilty, prompting a full trial. After nearly three years of proceedings, Justice Rosemond Baah-Tosu delivered the final judgment on Friday, April 24, 2025.
Relatives of the late Victoria Dapaah, who crowded the courtroom, expressed relief and gratitude over the verdict. Her mother, Adwoa Nyarko, thanked the media for their consistent coverage of the case, describing the judgment as “long-overdue justice” for her daughter.
Background
On April 20, 2023, Victoria Dapaah, alias Maa Adwoa, aged 26, was allegedly shot and killed by her boyfriend, Police Inspector Ahmed Twumasi, in Adum, near her residence.
During his first court appearance, Inspector Twumasi admitted to the shooting but maintained that it was not intentional, claiming he never meant to kill his lover. Investigations by the prosecution uncovered that the incident followed a dispute over a GH¢5,000 debt.
The police officer had reportedly demanded repayment from the deceased, and upon her failure to refund the amount, he allegedly shot her, leading to her death.
