MoFFA gives unlicensed mortuaries, funeral homes one week to legitimise operations

The Mortuaries and Funeral Facilities Agency (MoFFA) has issued a one-week deadline to all unlicensed mortuaries and funeral facilities, instructing them to regularize their operations or face closure.
According to a press release dated October 22, 2025, the Agency is mandated under Part Two of the Health Institutions and Facilities Act, 2011 (Act 829) to license, regulate, and monitor all facilities involved in the storage, transportation, and disposal of human remains.
MoFFA has expressed concern that several mortuaries and funeral homes continue to operate illegally, in contravention of Section 55 of Act 829, which stipulates that operating a facility without registration or licensing is an offense punishable by a fine or temporary or permanent facility closure.
“All operators of facilities and practitioners are by this notice advised to take steps to regularise their operations or risk closure of their facilities,” the statement warned.
The Agency encouraged affected operators to contact its offices at the former Ministry of Health Main Building, Room 22, or reach out through its official phone lines or website — www.moffa.gov.gh — for assistance.
MoFFA reaffirmed its commitment to ensuring dignity in death and public health safety under its motto, “Protecting the Living; Dignifying the Dead.”
