Dismissed police officer jailed 12 years for defiling 13-year-old girl

The Koforidua Circuit Court “B” has sentenced former Corporal Emmanuel Nyame, a dismissed police officer, to 12 years’ imprisonment for defiling a 13-year-old girl living with his fiancée.

According to the prosecution’s case, as presented by Regional State Attorney Emily Addo-Kyereh, on April 11, 2019, Nyame took advantage of his fiancée’s absence at a funeral and deceived the victim into entering his vehicle. He drove the victim to Timberland, a drinking spot in Koforidua, and asked her to assist a lady with cooking.

Nyame then proceeded with the victim to a funeral ground and later to his quarters at Nsukwao Police Barracks near Ghateco, where he instructed the victim to fold laundered clothes.

He then departed and returned with lines of beads in various colors, which he placed around the victim’s waist, alleging they were given to him by his grandmother.

Nyame subsequently engaged in forcible sexual intercourse with the victim despite her resistance and warned her not to disclose the incident to anyone, threatening that she would die if she did. The victim later informed her aunt’s daughter, who in turn notified her father.

The victim’s father reported the incident to the police, and a subsequent medical examination confirmed the sexual assault.

 

Nyame denied the offense in his investigation cautioned statement, but medical report and further investigations found him culpable and was charged with defilement.

He however jumped bail on August 13, 2019. Investigations revealed Emmanuel Nyame left Ghana to Dubai through Togo.

He was declared wanted after a bench warrant was issued for his arrest.

On June 21, 2024, he was arrested at Kotoka International Airport upon his return from Dubai by Immigration Service officials and handed over to the police.

Defence Counsel, Francis Xavier Sosu, subsequently applied for a bail for the convict insisting he was a first time offender, but was refused by the court.
