Junior doctors to withdraw services nationwide over unpaid salaries

The Junior Doctors’ Association of Ghana (JDA-GH) has declared that its members will withdraw their services nationwide in response to alleged neglect and unfair treatment.
According to a statement signed by President of JDA, Dr. (Med) Louis Afia Nkrumah, over 200 junior doctors have been without salaries for between 10 and 14 months, while others previously on payroll have had their pay halted without explanation.
Additionally, more than 800 medical officers have been awaiting posting for over a year. Despite numerous engagements with authorities, the association asserted that no lasting solution has been provided.
As part of the action, outpatient services will be suspended from Tuesday, 7 October to Thursday, 9 October.
Emergency services will also be withdrawn from Friday, 10 October until further notice. Inpatients will continue to be managed until discharge, but no new admissions will be made.
The association stressed that the exploitation of junior doctors “will no longer be tolerated” and placed responsibility for any disruption to healthcare services on the Ministry of Health and the government.
It urged stakeholders to act immediately to resolve the matter.
