First batch of UDS heroes arrive home after historic FISU World University Games triumph

The University for Development Studies (UDS) football team has made a triumphant return to Ghana, following their historic victory at the 2025 FISU World University Games.

The team arrived at Kotoka International Airport on Friday, where they were greeted by fans, family members, and officials. Team captain Mohammed Sulemana and head coach Ibrahim Tanko were among the first to arrive, having successfully guided the team to their historic win.

UDS secured a place in the record books by defeating defending champions Paulista University of Brazil 2-1 in extra time, claiming the prestigious 2025 FISU World University Football Cup.

This achievement marks the first time an African university has lifted the coveted title, earning widespread acclaim across the continent.

Upon arrival, Captain Mohammed Sulemana addressed the media, describing the triumph as a dream realized. “The pressure to deliver for UDS and Africa was immense, and our focus was solely on achieving success,” he stated.

Coach Ibrahim Tanko attributed the team’s success to the players’ discipline and hard work, noting that this achievement marks a significant milestone for university football in Ghana. The remaining team members are expected to arrive in Ghana on Sunday, September 5, 2026.

Preparations are underway for an official reception to honor the team and technical staff for their exceptional performance on the global stage.

UDS’ victory at the FISU World University Games has sparked nationwide celebrations, with many hailing the team’s achievement as an inspiration for youth development in sports. This win is seen as a testament to Ghana’s growing potential in nurturing world-class talent through academic and sporting excellence.
