Ghanaian singer and songwriter Kofi Kinaata says no global recognition, not even the Grammy Awards, compares to the honour he received from Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, the Asantehene.

Kinaata was presented with the Youth in Entertainment Award during the Otumfuo Millennium Excellence Awards on May 9, 2025, at the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi. The award celebrates individuals whose work has significantly contributed to national development.

Speaking on Angel FM, Kinaata described it as the highest honour of his career, noting that the Grammys largely reward musicians, but Otumfuo’s recognition extends beyond music to societal impact.

“Grammy awards are primarily given to musicians, but the award Otumfuo bestowed is unique and stands out. You could sing your entire life and still not receive it, which I consider more prestigious than the Grammys,” he said.

Kinaata revealed that the honour has opened new opportunities, expanding his fanbase and creating access to shows and events he previously wouldn’t have been considered for.

Otumfuo himself has publicly praised Kinaata’s artistry, once referencing his hit song Susuka as a piece “full of wisdom” during the Ghana Bar Association’s General Conference in 2024.

Other award recipients included Dr. Osei Kwame Despite (Despite Group of Companies), Dr. Ernest Ofori Sarpong (Special Ice Water), and Dr. Nick Danso (Ghana Link Network Services).
