Suhum: Fire Service recovers remains of 1-week-old baby from toilet pit

Personnel from the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS) in Suhum retrieved the lifeless body of a one-week-old baby boy from a toilet pit in a tragic incident in Ali, a suburb of Suhum, according to a statement by the Eastern Regional Public Relations Office of the GNFS.
The discovery was made on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, near Gateway Preparatory School.
A distress call was received at approximately 6:30 a.m. and promptly responded to by the Suhum Municipal Fire Station. An 11-member rescue team, led by ASTNO Danso Henry, arrived at the scene at 6:44 a.m. and initiated a carefully coordinated rescue operation.
By 7:00 a.m., the team successfully retrieved the baby’s body from the pit, but unfortunately, he was unresponsive.
Preliminary investigations suggest a suspected case of infanticide, purportedly perpetrated by the infant’s mother, who allegedly fled the scene. The body has since been transferred to the police as investigations continue.
The Fire Service commended the crew for their exemplary professionalism, bravery, and prompt response in handling the emotionally challenging task.
“We commend the brave Suhum Fire Rescuers for their prompt response, professionalism, and dedication in handling this heartbreaking incident,” the statement read.
Authorities are urging anyone with information on the whereabouts of the mother or the circumstances surrounding the incident to assist the police in their ongoing investigations.
