NIA clarifies Ghana Card remains valid for 10 years

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has denied reports suggesting a reduction in the validity period of the Ghana Card from 10 years.
In a statement signed by the Head of Corporate Affairs, Williams Ampomah E. Darlas, the authority clarified that the Ghana Card remains valid for 10 years from the date of issuance, after which it must be renewed in compliance with the law.
The NIA explained that recent comments by its Executive Secretary, Wisdom Kwaku Deku, had been misinterpreted.
According to the authority, Mr Deku did not announce any policy change but only indicated that future reviews could consider shorter update intervals due to technological advancements.
The NIA highlighted that the current 10-year renewal requirement for the Ghana Card remains in force, observing that the card’s lifespan and the anticipated changes in a cardholder’s personal features over a decade informed the duration.
The NIA urged the public to disregard misinformation and reaffirmed its commitment to providing a secure, reliable, and future-ready national identification system for Ghanaians.
