End weeding as punishment; it kills students' interest in farming- Chief of Staff Julius Debrah tells school authorities

Chief of Staff, Julius Debrah, has appealed to school authorities to put an end to the practice of using weeding as a form of punishment for students.

Speaking at an event, he noted that while discipline is crucial in schools, punishing students with farm work creates negative perceptions about agriculture and discourages them from embracing farming as a valuable profession.

According to him, weeding as punishment makes young people associate farming with wrongdoing rather than opportunity. “When you use farming-related tasks as punishment, you indirectly tell students that agriculture is for the wrongdoers, and that kills their interest in the sector,” he stressed.

Mr. Debrah urged school authorities to explore more innovative and corrective forms of discipline that do not destroy the long-term image of agriculture, especially at a time when Ghana is working to encourage youth participation in agribusiness.
