The Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) has categorically denied circulating media reports alleging the arrest of Brigadier General Michael Opoku by security operatives for possessing ammunition.

In a press release issued on Tuesday, August 19, 2025, and signed by Captain V.A. Arhin, the Acting Director General of Public Relations, the military high command stated that thorough checks with relevant authorities had failed to confirm the alleged incident.

As at date, all enquiries from various Security Agencies and National Investigation Authorities have not corroborated the said publication of arrest,” the release stated.

The statement aimed to clarify the status of the senior officer, affirming, “The Armed Forces confirm that Brigadier General Michael Opoku remains an active member of the Ghana Armed Forces and is not under arrest for any committed crime.”

Reiterating its commitment to the rule of law, the GAF assured the public that any soldier found guilty of a crime would face the full rigors of the law.

“The Ghana Armed Forces wishes to assure the general public that, notwithstanding the false publication, any military personnel involved in any crime would be subjected to the same procedures as any other citizen of the Country.”

Describing the viral news item as entirely false, the security institution urged the public to disregard it and cautioned against the dissemination of false information.

“The Ghana Armed Forces wishes to state categorically that the story is false and should be ignored. It urges all to refrain from such misinformation and disinformation activities.”
