A man has been taken into custody for unlawful possession of a pistol and ammunition following a routine police operation at the Tweapease Barrier near Obuasi in the Ashanti Region.

The arrest took place on July 29, 2025, during a vehicle inspection by officers of the Ashanti South Regional Police Command. A Toyota minibus travelling from Kumasi to Tarkwa was stopped for checks.

Upon conducting a search, authorities found an unregistered Bruni Model 92 pistol, loaded with three rounds of live 9mm ammunition, secretly stored in a passenger’s backpack.

The passenger, Osman Abdul Majeed, was apprehended after failing to provide documentation permitting him to possess or transport the weapon.

As stated in a police statement released on August 5, Majeed claimed under interrogation that he had received the firearm from an individual known only as Awal in Tamale.

He alleged that he was instructed to deliver the weapon to a recipient in Tarkwa, whose identity remains unknown. Majeed is currently being held in custody and is expected to face charges.

The police are continuing their investigation to trace the source of the pistol and apprehend other suspects believed to be involved.

The police will maintain routine security checkpoints and conduct intelligence-driven searches to prevent the movement of illegal arms.

The public is being urged to report any suspicious activities to help maintain security.
