The Minority Caucus in Parliament has presented a donation of GH¢100,000 to the national women’s football team, the Black Queens, in acknowledgement of their exceptional performance at the 2024 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, where they secured a bronze medal.

The gesture, announced on the floor of Parliament by Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin, aims to celebrate the team’s resilience and outstanding achievement on the continental stage.

“This is our way of demonstrating appreciation to the Black Queens for making Ghana proud,” stated Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin.

“Women in sports must be encouraged in all spheres, not only in football.”

“Mr. Speaker, it is clear that thus far we have been hearing words of encouragement, so we in the Minority are donating GHC 100,000 to support the women.”

“Despite the challenges, they fought with heart and brought home a medal. They deserve more than just applause.”

The Black Queens’ third-place finish at WAFCON 2024 marked a notable resurgence in form for the team, rekindling national pride and prompting calls for enhanced investment in women’s football.

The Minority Caucus also urged the government and corporate sector to provide increased support to female athletes and to prioritize the development of women’s sports in Ghana.
