On Monday, July 28, a tragic accident occurred on the Atwedie stretch of the Kumasi-Accra highway, reportedly resulting in the deaths of approximately 15 members of the Saviour Church of Ghana.

A traffic accident occurred at approximately 2:30 p.m. involving a collision between a vehicle transporting church members and a fuel tanker approaching from the opposite direction. Among the deceased are the children of the Head Pastor of the Church in Obogu.

According to Mr. Kofi Baah, an elder of the Obogu Saviour Church, the accident involved a fuel tanker. He told Adom News that the victims were members of the church youth group.

“The children left for a religious retreat at Koforidua on Friday for a congress. We were home when we received distress call of the accident involving members of our youth ministry. We rushed to Juaso Hospital only to witness this mass casualty. While some parents’ lost two children, some have lost three of their children,’ an elder of the church, Kofi Baah told newsmen.

“Fifteen bodies are at the mortuary while 4 other critically injured are on admission at the Emergency Unit. Among those dead are the two children of our Pastor”. He said.

According to reports, a fuel tanker traveling from Kumasi to Accra collided head-on with a Ford Transit bus carrying youth after it experienced a tire blowout while attempting to overtake another vehicle at approximately 2 p.m. on Tuesday.

Emergency response teams from the Juaso Motor Traffic and Transport Directorate (MTTD), Ambulance Service, and the Ghana National Fire Service from Konongo and Juaso responded promptly to the scene to provide assistance to the victims, who ranged in age from 4 to 21 years.

The Obogu Township has been thrown into a state of mourning following the accident.
